Ruth Chun is a corporate commercial lawyer focused on providing legal advice to cannabis and emerging plant-based medical companies. She is the former general counsel and corporate secretary for Newstrike Brands Ltd. / Up Cannabis Inc., a cannabis producer, and was active in its listing on the TSX Venture Exchange, raising over $150 million in financing and sale to HEXO Corp., a large cannabis consumer packaged goods cannabis company, where she was senior legal counsel following the company merger.
Ms. Chun advises both cannabis and non-cannabis firms and is a regularly sought after speaker for her expertise in the cannabis industry. She is regularly called upon as a speaker and is a guest lecturer at several universities on cannabis law. She is on the Advisory Board for the Osgoode Certificate in Cannabis Law & Regulations, was a founding member of the Global Cannabis Partnership and was elected to the board of directors of the Cannabis Council of Canada. She also serves as Chair of the non-profit organization SAVIS of Halton and director of Milton Baptist Church.
Prior to her foray into the cannabis industry, she served as the first female executive at a leading insurer in southern Africa as the head of legal and compliance and was a partner at Africa’s largest law firm. She was also chair of Rio Tinto’s pension fund for Rossing Uranium Mine and a trustee of the Alexander Forbes group of funds. In 2019 she was a finalist for the Canadian General Counsel Awards. She received an Honours BA (Trinity College) and MA from the University of Toronto and Juris Doctor from Queens University. Ms. Chun is admitted to legal practice in Ontario, New York and Namibia.
