SPEAKER SNEAK PREVIEW

Alison McMahonAlison McMahon, CEO of Canadian cannabis recruiting firm Cannabis At Work, describes what it takes to succeed in this new, entrepreneurial industry.

Describe your journey into the cannabis industry.

I had a Human Resource consulting practice. In 2015, I started to see a lot about cannabis in the media and recognized an opportunity to apply my skill set to the “green rush.” I started Cannabis At Work in late 2015 and today we are Canada’s only staffing agency focused exclusively on the cannabis sector.

From your perspective, where do you see the industry going?

We see a tremendous amount of growth in the Canadian sector as we move toward recreational legalization on October 17, 2018. Beyond that, we see an opportunity in the international market as more countries move towards legalization.

How is the cannabis industry similar to other industries you’d worked in previously?

The cannabis sector is very entrepreneurial. It is incredibly fast-paced and growing quickly. This creates a fun environment, assuming you are comfortable working with ambiguity and a lot of change. The industry is young and there are a lot of new businesses, so everyone is experiencing the same learning curve together. There is a sense that we are all in this together!

In what ways can this knowledge be applied in the cannabis industry?

People who are entrepreneurial and like problem solving will be successful in this industry.

What do you hope to achieve at CanEx Jamaica this year?

I am looking forward to sharing what we’re learning from the Canadian cannabis sector about hiring and workforce development. I am also excited to learn more about the Latin American cannabis sector.
