James Burr is a pioneer of Jamaica’s legal cannabis industry and a veteran cannabis advocate. In 1995, his company, Alternative Import & Export, was the first to advise the Jamaican government on cannabis production for sustainable island development. James, along with his wife Jill McKenzie Burr,worked closely with Minister Phillip Paulwell, then Minister of Finance, Industry, and Investment. Together, they led the governments first cannabis committee, organized to research and promote Jamaica’s transition to legal production. Jamesalso provided support to Jamaica’s legalize ganja movement and collaborated with Rastafarian elders leading the campaign. These efforts gave the government a new perspective on ganja and helped pave the way for Jamaica’s medical cannabis industry.
Today, James is excited by the opportunity for Jamaica to be a leader in the global cannabis market and a destination for cannabis tourism.He is Founder and Principal of Enlighten Development, Inc., a sustainable Caribbean resort development and consultancy company that integrates a focus on cannabis.
James is also Founder of Enlighten Cannabis, an Enlighten Development, Inc. project with plans for sustainable cannabis production and a commitment to empowering Jamaica’s traditional ganja farmers to produce for the legal cannabis market.
Along with deep roots in cannabis, he has a background in sustainable development, expertise in the health & wellness industry, and 25-years’traveling and conducting business in Jamaica.Jamie has been involved with several innovative projects incorporating ecological planning, green building, and renewable energy. He has worked for some of North America’s leading solar companies and co-founded Malibu Solar, where he served as Executive Project Manager, specializing in the design of solar solutions for residential and commercial applications.
His experience extends to the nutraceutical market, with a personal passion for andextensive knowledge of natural healing and cannabis wellness products.
Jamie has been business partners with his wife, Jill McKenzie Burr,since 1995, when they launched their first venture together. Married in Jamaica in 1998, they share a passion for the Caribbean and a commitment to socially and environmentally responsible development in the region.
